Lime pointing

Why older walls are pointed in lime

Older buildings in Leicestershire were generally built from soft brick or ironstone bedded in lime mortar. Lime is softer than the masonry around it and lets water move back out through the joints. Repointing a wall like that in sand and cement closes the joints up, so water that gets in leaves through the face of the brick or stone instead. Blown brick faces, eroded stone and damp on the inside of an external wall often follow.

More on lime pointing

  1. Rake out

    Old mortar is removed by the most suitable method, deep enough to give the new mortar something to key into.

  2. Damp down

    The joint is brushed clean and wetted so the wall does not pull the water out of the fresh mix.

  3. Point up

    Lime mortar is worked back into the joint and finished to match the rest of the elevation.

  4. Protect

    The new work is covered and kept damp while it sets.
